Founded in 1999, Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL) is India's leading securities depository, enabling investors to securely hold and transact in financial securities in a dematerialized (electronic) format. As of February 28, 2025, CDSL is the largest depository in India, with over 15.12 crore active demat accounts.
As a Market Infrastructure Institution (MII), CDSL plays a crucial role in the Indian capital markets, providing seamless services to exchanges, clearing corporations, depository participants (DPs), issuers, and investors. CDSL’s mission has remained unchanged for over two decades i.e to offer secure, reliable, and accessible depository services at an affordable cost. As of February 2025, the CDSL website recorded a whopping:

- 1999: India’s then Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha flagged off CDSL’s operations, and the first demat trade settlement took place.
- 2002-2004: Launched ‘easi’ and ‘easiest’ internet platforms for secure securities management.
- 2005: Crossed 1 million active demat accounts and onboarded 5,000+ companies.
- 2006-2008: Introduced SMS alerts (SMART), ventured into KYC record-keeping via CDSL Ventures, and signed MoUs with depositories worldwide.
- 2010: Launched the National Academic Depository to digitize educational certificates.
- 2023: CDSL became India’s first depository with 10 crore demat accounts.
- 2024: Issued 1:1 Bonus Shares, marking another milestone for CDSL’s legacy.
