Tata Power was founded on Sep 18, 1919. Initially called Tata Hydroelectric Power Supply Company. Later, in 1922, it became Tata Power Company Limited. It’s one of India’s largest integrated power companies. A key entity of the Tata Group. It operates across the entire energy spectrum such as power generation, transmission, distribution, and renewables.
Based in Mumbai, Tata Power drives India’s economic growth, plays a crucial role in energy security, has a strong focus on sustainable energy, but still keeps a solid footing in conventional power generation.
In the past few years, Tata Power has helped shape India’s energy landscape and backed national initiatives like ‘Power for All’ and ‘Make in India’. With an expanding global presence, India’s position in the global energy sector is being strengthened.
Tata Power’s story goes way back to 1919. The Tata Group, led by Jamsetji Tata’s vision, stepped into hydroelectric power generation. Wanted to meet India’s rising energy needs, the company’s first hydroelectric plant was set up at Khopoli, Maharashtra, in 1915. Though it was officially incorporated in 1919.
A big milestone came in 1981 when Tata Power commissioned India’s first 500 MW thermal power unit at Trombay, Mumbai. Then, in 2000, it took a bold step into renewable energy, where wind power projects marked its entry into clean energy. Over the 2010s, solar projects were added too which strengthened its renewable portfolio.
2012 was a game-changer when Tata Power commissioned the 4000 MW Mundra Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) in Gujarat. It was India’s first UMPP that gave a major boost to generation capacity.
Fast forward to Sep 30, 2024. Tata Power signed an MoU with the Rajasthan government at the Rising Rajasthan Investor Meet, where a huge commitment of ₹1.2 lakh crore was made over the next 10 years.
In March 2025, Tata Power crossed 1,50,000 rooftop solar installations across India and a total capacity of around 3 GW. Reinforcing its position as the nation’s top rooftop solar provider.
Transmission & Distribution: Tata Power runs a transmission network that spans 4,633 Ckm, covering Mumbai, UP, West Bengal, Bihar, Rajasthan, and Haryana. In distribution, it serves 12.5 million customers across Mumbai, Odisha, and Delhi through Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (TPDDL) and in Ajmer through TP Ajmer Distribution Ltd (TPADL).
Thermal & Hydro Power Generation: Thermal and hydro power generation is a major part of Tata Power’s business. This vertical generates 880 MW from hydroelectric sources and over 9,300 MW from thermal sources—coal, gas, and oil. Tata Power runs owned and leased plants and offers related ancillary services. The company is also active in coal mining, trading, shipping, and infrastructure in Indonesia, with a total mining capacity of 78 MT.
Renewables: Renewables are also a strong focus for Tata Power. The renewable energy portfolio totals 5,384 MW, including solar and wind projects. The company offers rooftop solar systems with over 1.3 lakh EV charging stations and provides solar cell and module manufacturing, EPC, and maintenance services. The solar module capacity is 4,982 MW.
Tata Power also handles project management contracts, infrastructure management services, satellite communication, and a few other services.
